As a Belles-Lettres graduate I could never resist the beauty of pretty everything that may refer or be a personification of art/aesthetics. Do you know what I mean? Interwar (and not only, La Belle Epoque is also full of 'wow') stories and ways of living, literary movements and currents of thinking, architectonic masterpieces, music. La dolce vita as Italians put it or that savoire vive if you're more of a French. And that's why I decided to share with you today a very dear scent to me, which also happens to be a perfect blend of classy and modern, my everyday guideline and life philosophy. Coco Noir is dark, but not extremely heavy, elegant and refined which makes me think of Baroque velvets, rich, intricate embellishments and somptuous jewelry. As Jacques Polge stated, this scent was designed to illustrate Chanel's love for Venice and its Byzantine influences, which were later incorporated into her life and her creations.
At first glance, this perfume (like many other from Chanel) might seem to reveal neither the image of a lost culture and civilization nor the magic of its decorative art; but as everything in life, there is a certain beauty, but on a deeper level and it is up to you to find it or leave it undiscovered. Anyway, you get a hint of what lies inside that perfectly shaped black bottle (which ressembles those sophisticated crystal whiskey decanters or maybe the design of Charvet toiletry bottles) immediatly after you take off the lid.
The scent itself opens with citrusy, zesty undertones of bergamot wrapped in a balsamic 'cloud' that gives elegance and boldness to the entire composition, but in a seductive, vamp-like way; This fades out slowly to take on a secret sweetness (given by sandalwood and geranium) and finally settles into the most amazing balance of 'tamed', soft patchouli and sweet spices; moreover, being such an aromatic concoction it can be very easily passed for an unisex fragrance.
Also, Coco Noir seems to be, in my opinion, a very interesting combination between Coco and Coco Mademoiselle, keeping the Oriental, spicy touch of the first and the citrusy sparkles of the latter, but lacking its (Mademoiselle's) feminity.
